
Julie Vulcan is a Sydney based performer and interdisciplinary artist. A UNSW College of Fine Arts graduate, her practice spans performance, installation, durational and site specific work. Her early work (1988 - 92) focused on video and sound installation and appeared in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, represented by the 4th and 7th Australian International Video Festivals, ARX 3, Experimenta and the Performance Space, Sydney. From 1993 she engaged more directly in performance, working with many quirky, cutting edge and unreasonable ensembles. Stilt walking across Northern Europe with Icarus, tackling b-grade horror and embracing the awkward with the all-girl group Frumpus and inhabiting unreasonable romance with Unreasonable Adults. In addition Julie has performed in 'Finale' with Pacitti Company (UK) and 'Balconies' with ERTH (AUS) as well as in the video works of Australian artists Anna Davis (A/PROXY[MATE] ENCOUNTERS 2006) and Sam James (Dreamshelving 2011). She has also contributed to the works of many artists including PVI Collective, Barbara Campbell, Hancock & Kelly live, Panther, Deborah Pollard and Cat Jones. Julie's devised works include 'B(b)UG', Performance Space 2003; 'Mz Very Thr(illin)' 2005; 'Shortly...'2006; 'The Power of Constraint' trilogy' 2007-9; 'Un/Disclosed' a two year micro performance project 2008-09; 'So it goes like this...' 2009; the durational and site specific works 'I Stand In','Spotlight Bunny','Breach' and 'Spotlight B (Redress)' 2011. In September 2010, Julie was appointed the Associate Director at PACT centre for emerging artists, Sydney, where she has co-directed the PACT Ensemble productions 'Unsettlings' 2010 and 'Beguiled' 2011 and mentors emerging artists.
